Clay Bar for Car Paint & Clay Lube
A clay bar for your car is only ever as safe as the lubricant under it. FLASH CLAY LUBE gives clay the glide to lift bonded contamination out of the paint instead of dragging it across the surface.

What a clay bar treatment actually does
The bag test, the right amount of lube, and why a dropped bar is finished.
What is a clay bar treatment for cars?
It is mechanical decontamination: a soft resin bar glides across lubricated paint and shears off contamination that has bonded to the surface — industrial fallout, overspray, rail dust, tree sap. Washing lifts none of it, because it is stuck in and on the lacquer rather than sitting in the dirt above it. The test is simple. Put your hand inside a thin plastic bag and run your fingertips over freshly washed paint: if it feels gritty or bumpy instead of glass-smooth, the car needs claying, and the before-and-after is something you feel long before you see it.
How do you use a clay bar on a car?
Wash the car first, then work one small area at a time. Spray the panel until it is genuinely wet with clay lube, flatten the bar into a patty and glide it back and forth under light pressure — the clay should move freely and go quiet as the surface cleans up. Fold it to a fresh face every panel or so, then wipe the area down and move on. Never let the panel run dry; the lubricant is the only thing standing between the clay and your lacquer.
When should you use a clay bar on a car?
After chemical decontamination and before any polishing, coating or wax. Chemicals dissolve the tar and the iron, clay picks up what is left, and working in that order makes the bar last far longer. Most road cars want claying once or twice a year, or whenever the bag test says the paint is rough. There is little point claying a car you are not going to protect afterwards — the paint is bare and at its most vulnerable the moment you finish.
Step by step
- Wash and deconClay paint that is already washed and chemically decontaminated, or you will drag grit around.
- Soak the panelSpray clay lube generously over a small area — the surface has to stay wet the whole time.
- Glide, don't pressMove the clay back and forth under light pressure until it stops grabbing and runs silently.
- Fold and checkFold to a clean face regularly, wipe the panel dry, then repeat the bag test before moving on.
A clay bar that touches the ground picks up grit you cannot see and cannot wash out, and it will scratch the next panel you touch. A dropped bar goes in the bin, not back in the box.
Clay bar questions
The ones we get asked most, by first-timers and studios alike.
Where can I buy a clay bar in the UK?
Here — the 500 ml FLASH CLAY LUBE V.3 comes as a complete clay bar set, so the bar and the lubricant arrive together instead of you hunting for both. Stock sits in the UK, everything ships tracked, and UK delivery is free over £100. The 5 L FLASH CLAY LUBE is the lube-only refill for studios claying every week.
How much clay do I need for one car?
One bar covers a normal car, as long as you keep folding it to a clean face and keep the panel wet. Heavily contaminated paint uses clay up faster, because each fold loads with grit sooner. When you run out of clean faces the bar is finished; carrying on simply drags the contamination back across the paint.
Can you use a clay bar on a vinyl wrap?
Yes, carefully. Wrap film is softer than cured lacquer, so use the mildest clay you have, twice the lubricant you think you need, and barely any pressure at all. Test a low panel first and stay well away from edges and seams, where the film is thinnest and most easily lifted.
How do you store a clay bar between uses?
Knead it back into a ball, mist it with clay lube and seal it in an airtight box, away from heat and sunlight. Stored dry, clay hardens and turns into a scouring pad. If it has gone crumbly, stiff or grey all the way through, replace it — a new bar costs a great deal less than a machine polish.
Which clay bar is best for cars?
The mildest grade that shifts your contamination. Aggressive clay works faster but leaves marring that has to be polished out afterwards, which turns an afternoon into a weekend. For a normal road car, a fine or medium bar with plenty of lubricant is the right answer — and the lubricant does more for the result than the clay does.
What comes before and after claying
Claying sits in the middle of the prep. These are the stages around it.
