How do you remove water spots from car glass?
Water spots are mineral deposits left behind when hard water dries on the surface, so a glass cleaner cannot dissolve them and simply wipes over the top. They have to come off mechanically, which is what WATER SPOT GLASS POLISH is for: a paste with enough abrasive power to lift the deposits by hand or on a slow machine pass. Clean the glass first so you are polishing deposits rather than road grime. Take one small area at a time, keep the paste damp, and rinse to check progress before you move on.
What is the difference between glass cleaner, glass polish and a glass coating?
A cleaner removes what is sitting on the glass: dust, film, finger marks. A polish removes what has bonded to it, which means water spots, mineral scale, industrial fallout and the greasy haze that builds up over years. A coating goes on afterwards and stops the next lot sticking, and that is what gives you beading and a screen that clears itself at speed. Skip the middle stage and the coating bonds to contamination instead of glass, so it fails early.
Can you machine polish car glass?
Yes, and on a full windscreen it is far less tiring than doing it by hand. Use a small pad, a low speed and light pressure, and keep the pad moving, because glass does not shed heat the way paint does. Never let the paste dry out or dwell in one spot, and stay off the printed edges and rear-screen heating elements. For a door glass or a handful of spots, hand work with a foam applicator is quicker to set up than the machine.

Heated rear windows carry their elements and any tint film on the inside face, so polish the outside only and keep away from the printed edges. Soft tops with plastic rear screens need a dedicated plastic product instead.

Why do my wipers judder and smear on clean glass?
Usually because the glass is contaminated, not because the blades are worn. A film of traffic grime, old rain repellent and mineral scale gives the rubber something to catch on, and that stick-slip is what you feel as chatter. Polishing the screen back to bare glass fixes juddering more often than a new set of blades does. Replace the blades as well if the rubber is split or hardened.
Will glass polish remove scratches from a windscreen?
No. This is a decontamination polish for bonded deposits and staining, not a scratch remover, and if you can catch a scratch with a fingernail it is too deep to polish out. Removing genuine glass scratches takes cerium oxide and a lot of controlled work, and on a windscreen it risks optical distortion right in your line of sight. A chipped or scratched screen is a job for a glass specialist.
Why is my windscreen so hard to see through at night?
Oncoming headlights scatter on the film that builds up on glass, so a screen that looks fine in daylight turns into glare after dark. That film is a mix of road grime, exhaust residue and spent rain-repellent products, and it needs polishing off rather than wiping off. Do the inside too with a glass cleaner, because plasticiser haze from the dashboard is half the problem.
Can I use ordinary car polish on glass?
No. Paint polishes are tuned to refine soft lacquer, and their abrasives break down long before they touch a mineral deposit on glass. You would spend an hour on a windscreen and achieve nothing except a greasy surface to clean off afterwards. Use a polish built for glass and keep the paint compound for the panels.
Do I need to seal the glass after polishing?
Yes, if you want it to stay clear. Polishing strips the surface of everything, including whatever repellent was left on it, so bare glass picks up fresh water spots the first time it rains and dries in the sun. A hydrophobic coating stops deposits bonding and makes every clean after that easier. Apply it once the glass is dry and free of polish residue.
