How to polish metal on a car

Chrome, exhaust tips and bare trim behave nothing like paint. Here is what actually works.

How do you polish chrome on a car?

Wash and dry the area first, because chrome shows every speck of grit and polishing over dirt puts scratches in. Then work a small amount of polish into one section at a time with a soft cloth or foam applicator, using steady overlapping passes until the residue turns dark. That black smear is the oxidation coming off, not the chrome itself. Buff it away with a clean microfibre and move to the next section.

What is the best polish for metal car trim?

A dedicated metal polish rather than a paint polish. Paint compounds are built to refine soft lacquer, and they are far too gentle for oxidised chrome, aluminium or stainless steel. On badly neglected trim the answer is usually two or three passes, not a harsher paste.

How often should you polish metal trim?

Only when it dulls. Polishing removes a little material every time, so it is not a monthly job like a wash. Bare metal starts to re-oxidise the moment it is exposed to air, which is why unprotected trim goes hazy again within weeks, and sealing it with a wax, sealant or coating stretches that to months. Exhaust tips are the exception, as heat and soot bring them back far quicker.

Plenty of modern brightwork is plated plastic or anodised aluminium, and an abrasive polish will dull or strip it. Test a hidden corner first and look at the cloth: black residue means real metal you can safely work on.

What people ask before taking a polish to chrome or an exhaust tip.

Can I use car polish on chrome?

Not effectively. Paint polish is formulated for clear coat, which is much softer than plated chrome or stainless steel, so it cleans the surface but leaves the oxidation sitting there. A metal polish uses abrasives matched to metal and cuts through the tarnish instead of sliding over it. Keep the paint compound for the panels and use the right paste on the brightwork.

How do you clean and polish exhaust tips?

Degrease and wash them first, because polishing baked-on soot only spreads it around. Once the tip is clean and completely cool, work the polish in with a cloth or a light machine pass, turning to a fresh part of the cloth as it goes black. Stainless tips usually take two passes: one to lift the heat staining, one to bring the shine back.

Will metal polish remove rust?

It removes light surface rust and oxidation, but not pitting. Once corrosion has eaten into the metal you can polish the area bright again, yet the pits stay behind as small dark marks, because no polish fills a hole. Chrome that has rusted through from underneath is a replating job rather than a detailing one.

Do I need a machine, or will hand polishing work?

Hand polishing is perfectly good for trim, badges and small tips, and it gives you far more control on tight curves. A light machine pass with a small pad saves time on larger stainless or aluminium work, but keep the speed low, as metal conducts heat quickly. Either way the technique is the same: small sections, steady pressure, clean cloth to finish.

How do I stop chrome going dull again?

Protect it as soon as you have finished. Polishing leaves bare, unprotected metal, and bare metal reacts with air, water and road salt within days. A wax, sealant or ceramic coating over the top holds the shine for months instead of weeks. Trim and exhaust tips need it most through a UK winter.
