Car detailing is the deep cleaning, restoration and protection of a car — inside and out — taken far beyond what a normal wash can do. A proper detail works through every element of the vehicle: paintwork, wheels, glass, interior, even the awkward gaps most people never touch. What does car detailing actually include?
A full car detailing job covers three areas: the exterior, the interior, and the supporting elements — wheels, tyres, glass and the engine bay. None of it is guesswork. Each area has its own order of work, its own chemicals and its own techniques, and that structure is what separates detailing from simply “cleaning the car”.
On the outside, that means safely removing dirt without scratching, stripping off bonded contamination like tar and brake dust, correcting the paint by polishing, and then locking the result in with protection. Inside, it means upholstery, plastics, leather and glass — cleaned properly and then preserved so they wear more slowly.
The extras matter too. In my studio a full detail also takes in wheel faces and barrels, tyre and trim dressing, glass protection (what I call the invisible wiper — water simply beads off), and a careful engine bay clean.
The four exterior stages
Every exterior detail I do follows the same four stages: pre-wash, decontamination, polishing, protection. Skip a stage or run them out of order and you either scratch the paint or waste the work you have already done.
Pre-wash removes the loose dirt — mud, dust, insects — using an active foam, before anything touches the paint. I have covered exactly how to use snow foam in its own guide. Then comes the contact wash: washing by hand with the two-bucket method and a neutral-pH shampoo such as Swag Neutral Shampoo Concentr. V.3.
Decontamination deals with what washing cannot: tar spots, tree sap, and the metallic brake-dust particles embedded in the clear coat. Polishing then removes fine scratches and brings back the gloss. Finally, protection — a wax, sealant or ceramic coating — shields the corrected paint from the weather and from mechanical and chemical damage.

What does interior detailing involve?
Interior detailing means deep-cleaning the upholstery, carpets, plastics and leather, then protecting each surface so it stays that way. It is usually where the biggest transformation happens — most cars I get in the studio look fine outside and shocking inside.
The order is: remove and vacuum everything first, clean the fabrics and carpets to lift stains and odours, then work through the dashboard, door cards and trim with an all-purpose cleaner — I use Swag APC RTU for exactly this. The final step is conservation: dressing the plastics and feeding the leather so surfaces resist wear and look factory-fresh rather than greasy.
Car detailing vs valeting vs the local car wash
The difference is depth: a car wash cleans, a valet cleans thoroughly, a detail cleans, restores and protects. Here is how I explain it to customers:
